Magazine Feature

I was fortunate enough to be featured in the local Weekender magazine last week. I answered questions about my new jewellery venture, and talked about finding the courage to follow your dreams.

Pictured is a handpainted beetle brooch and Amber Butterfly necklace

Just in are these lovely Amber Butterfly necklaces. Two layers of acrylic (transparent orange and black) have been overlaid for this nice effect.

Only $25 and available at my online shop.

Cows are beautiful creatures

The recent news and images of how Australian cows have been treated in Indonesia have greatly disturbed me. Not only because I’m a lover of animals, but also because I grew up with cows as pets.
They are not stupid, mindless creatures, believe me.

When I was 12, two little female calves came to our family, one day before they were due to go to market. One calf was mine (Bluebell), the other my brother’s (Stubby). We hand-reared them (of course with a lot of help from our parents!) feeding them milk solution three times a day and giving them lots of cuddles and love. It only took a couple of days for them to go from semi-wild animals to completely domesticated, tame and loving pets. I have fond memories of spending hours with them, playing with them, taking them for walks on a leash and playing “bunting” games, much like the play-fighting games they’d play with their peers (but them butting their heads on our knees, they never hurt us). They were like big dogs. I couldn’t wait to get home from school to see Bluebell, hug her and inhale her sweet cow smell. She was my safe haven and comfort from my reality of being bullied.

The calves grew up and lost some of their playfulness and dependence on us, but remained loving and affectionate for the rest of their time with us. Bluebell would often give a deep, bellowing moo of greeting when I’d approach her. She loved chest rubs and would often rub her head against me whilst I struggled to stand against her strength.
Bluebell and Stubby had countless calves over the years and I had to learn very quickly that we couldn’t keep them all and also that no one wanted a cow as a “pet.”

Sadly, about ten years ago Stubby went missing, leaving behind a young calf. We scoured neighbouring properties for kilometers but never found her, or her body. It broke our hearts. She probably went off to die on a neighbour’s vast property. To us there was just no other explanation.

About ten years ago my family and I moved into town, but kept the farm, then about 5 years ago my parents sold the farm. We had to find a new home for Bluebell and Stubby’s first calf- now a huge, docile steer named Big Mac. They went to someone as “lawn mowers” and the last time I saw Bluebell was probably nearly 4 years ago. It was heartbreaking to know she wasn’t as loved  and was now just another cow. I don’t know if her or Mac is still alive. I try not to think about it.

Getting Bluebell made me become a vegetarian. I certainly don’t have problem with those who eat meat, but if people had more of a connection with animals, the land and nature in general, perhaps the whole meat industry would be a little more ethical and humane? That or people just aren’t aware of how animals are farmed and slaughtered. The huge public outcry of late has given me comfort that people do care about how the animals they eat are treated.

Anyway, the last thing I want to sound like is another preachy vegetarian. Eating meat is natural and a part of life. I just made the decision because of the strong bond I had with a cow, I just couldn’t reconcile eating meat. Real life doesn’t have a lot of room for a  romantic like me though.

Coffee does what?!

The Coffe Monster- a painting by myself

So, apparently coffee has the potential to make you hallucinate?!
http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/a-cuppa-sends-us-to-la-la-land/story-e6frfku0-1226071549826
Being a dedicated coffee drinker for about ten years now, I feel kind of left out that I haven’t experienced some sort of hallucination or have heard things…or seen ghosts or sensed telepathy. But then again, would one need to be analyzed first to know they were experiencing hallucinations?
Thinking about it, I guess it does make sense, coffee being a stimulant and all.

I do love some of the quotes in the story, very cute.

“It’s a drug like anything else, and I’m sure if you ate enough chocolate, you’d be seeing things too,” he said.
Pixie Beneblis, 26, wondered: “Maybe going on the coffee makes them channel on to another plane?”
And Degraves Espresso barista Daxie Chavez, 22, said some big coffee drinkers got a bit weird.
“Definitely. I find that a lot. Some of the stuff they talk about, it’s the most warped conversation – really left-field conversation,” he said.

Boo the dog gets a book deal

So apparently there’s this dog on Facebook that’s been given a book deal?! His name is Boo and he must have a lot of really important things to say. Don’t get my wrong, good on Boo for chasing is dreams and getting one step closer to world domination. But it’s kind of like getting Justin Bieber to write an autobiography.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, here are a few bad drawings…

The internet is run by cute animals. I suppose that is better than fat and sweaty old men…

Exciting new jewellery designs!!!

I am extremely excited to now offer a range of jewellery that I have designed myself!

The designs are all from original drawings I have done, and have been laser cut from black and white acrylic.

The inspiration came from a multitude of ideas I was constantly getting every day for jewellery designs. It was getting to the point where I would only close my eyes and these ideas would suddenly appear. the subconscious mind and imagination really is amazing if you know how to put it to work! I wasn’t able to sketch all the ideas down so most of them were lost. From all my ideas only a handful made the cull- as although I had a lot of weird and wacky ideas, they had to pass the wearability test  and stand up to normal, every day wear- and also be cost-effective to produce. I had also never done anything like this so I wanted to tentatively test the waters first to see how the technology would output my designs.

Just some of the original sketches

I was really inspired to create a range of jewellery that really stood apart from current offerings of many laser cut jewellery. I wanted to create striking pieces of wearable art all in my distinct artistic style.

I was extremely impressed and excited by the outcome! Here is the first range of my jewellery…

Bat Garland

Inspired by the bats that fly across from the river at dusk every night, silhouetted against the darkening sky. If you are quiet enough you can hear the eerie swooshing of their wings…

Noir Dragon

One of the most fearsome and intriguing of mythical creatures, the dragon has got a bad rap of late from nasty tattoos and tacky artwork found in spiritual stores.
I got my first taste of the might and wonder on the dragon from Smaug- from J R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” I’ve been entranced ever since.

Ruby red and yellow teardrop crystals, and ruby red and opaque red crystal rondelles hang from its claws and tail. A large and eye-catching piece- and probably my favourite.

Spider Webs

A spider sits on its web, waiting for prey- but don’t worry, he isn’t real! He will be happy to make your neck look pretty however.

Spider Web Earrings

Whimsical Rabbits

Whimsical necklaces of the highest order. Five different rabbits leaping, bounding or hopping.

Black Magic Feather

Only two available!

Ethereal White Feathers

One of a kind!

Keep an eye out as I am currently designing a new range- exploring myth, magic, the natural world and dreaming. I will be introducing wood as a new medium too!
